Happy birthday to Gemini XI and Apollo 12 astronaut Dick Gordon on what would have been his 95th birthday! Gordon was one of 24 people to have flown to the Moon. He was the command module pilot for Apollo 12 and, before that, the pilot for Gemini XI with astronaut Pete Conrad.

🌌✨ **Exploring Venus: The Fiery Neighbor** ✨🌌

Did you know Venus has the densest atmosphere of any rocky planet in our solar system? 🌍💨 Its atmosphere is a staggering 96.5% carbon dioxide, creating a thick blanket of global sulfuric acid clouds. ☁️🔥

With a mean surface temperature of 867°F (462°C), Venus is a scorching reminder of the effects of CO2 and runaway greenhouse gases. 🌡️🌋 While Earth is unlikely ever to experience such extreme conditions, Venus gives us a glimpse into what can happen when greenhouse gases dominate.

The pressure on Venus is a jaw-dropping 92 times that of Earth’s sea level—equivalent to being a kilometer underwater here on Earth! 🌊🔍 This intense pressure compresses CO2 into a supercritical state, turning it into a fluid at the surface, approximately 6.5% the density of water.

As we look at our celestial neighbor, let's remember the lessons it teaches us about our planet's atmosphere. 🌌💚

Dr. Robert Goddard, widely recognized as the father of modern rocketry, was born on this day in 1882. His pioneering work laid the foundation for the development of liquid-fueled rockets, which later became the basis for space exploration.

His legacy lives on at the Cosmosphere, where you can take a trip back to his 1930s lab. This interactive show—packed with explosive surprises—uses live demonstrations to take you on a journey through the history of rockets.

Massive win, or just meh? When Sputnik 1 launched on October 4, 1957, it was a huge wake-up call for the U.S. and the world. The Soviets had launched the very first artificial satellite into orbit.
